<image:title>Austin "Auz" Miles - Austin “Auz” Miles</image:title>
<image:caption>Austin “Auz” Miles grew up in Durham, North Carolina. As a young girl, Austin was inspired by distorted figures and the stories paintings could tell about African-American culture. Realizing her yearning to create at a young age, Austin began attending Durham School of the Arts at the age of eleven. Upon graduation, Austin relocated to Richmond, Virginia in 2012 to attend Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts (VCU); majoring in Communication Arts, and minoring in Painting & Printmaking. During her time at VCU, Austin decided that she was capable of pursuing a professional career in painting. In fall 2015, Austin launched Auz Can on her social media. Auz Can is a self motivating campaign that encourages people to believe in themselves and to follow one’s dreams. Shortly following the launch of Auz Can, Austin had her first solo exhibition in February 2016, titled AUZ. Since then, Austin “Auz” Miles has shown her work in Richmond VA, Washington D.C, Atlanta GA, and Cusco Peru. In Fall 2017, Austin Miles won the Amendment Art and Literary Journal Art Award, where her painting ‘Enough’ was published in the Amendment Art and Literary Journal December issue. Austin Miles graduated from VCU Arts with her Bachelors of Fine Arts in December 2017. Austin “Auz” Miles was first introduced to murals in the Spring of 2017, while collaborating to create Richmond’s first mural created by and specifically for black girls. It was then she realized the positive impact, importance, and representation that murals can provide for a community. In October 2018, Austin was chosen along with nine other muralists to participate in the Virginia Museum of History and Culture first mural exhibit, titled Fresh Paint. The Fresh Paint exhibit is currently on display until April 21, 2019. Austin is a practicing painter, graphic designer, and muralist in Richmond, VA. Austin uses color, texture, and distorted human and animal figures in her work, to embody her own stories; in an attempt to contribute to the conversation about Black female experiences.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I was born in Colombia in 1980 and graduated with a Fine Arts Degree in 2006, as well as a Masters in Education in 2011 in Bogotá. My involvement with artistic education has been very active since 2007, as an Art Teacher for Elementary, Middle and High School groups in different schools and non-profit organizations. In 2015 my family and I moved to the United States and I have been living and working in the Richmond area to date. Richmond is a place where my artistic practice has grown significantly, connecting me to different people, communities, organizations and institutions to work on creative healing projects and ways of visibilizing a change of narrative into our different cultural identities. In 2019 my work was recognized as the cover story for the Top 40 Under 40 from Richmond’s Style Weekly Magazine, highlighting my role as an Art Program Director with Sacred Heart Center and co directing the ARCA project (Art, Reconciliation and Civic Advocacy) with RVA Thrives, connecting African American and Latin American youth through public art. At the end of this same year I was able to present my independent dance and drawing project called Migration Flow, where we celebrated the first National Immigrants Day in Virginia. And in November I had the chance to design and share a TEDx Youth talk, focused on the different ways we can use Creative Languages to transform barriers into opportunities.</image:caption>

      <image:title>AMIRI RICHARDSON-KEYS - Amiri Richardson-Keys eidas.is.art@gmail.com amiri.life/about @amiri.life</image:title>
<image:caption>With Richmond, VA as the backdrop to his beginnings, Amiri naturally found artistic appreciation for culture. His city birthed the beginning of his exploration and love for art through graffiti, design and cartoon characters in his adolescent years. Later he realized it was not just an interest, it was indeed a passion to create artistically. Amiri enjoys creating images of love and art that speaks to the people and cultural awareness. As an African-American artist, I want to represent love in each piece by utilizing colors and lines that connect the audience to my thoughts and feelings. Art to me is the best form of unspoken communication. It allows you to express your emotions, beliefs and views of subjects and situations. There are no rules to art, you must create from within to remain authentic to yourself.</image:caption>

Kind of like a therapy session for the creators.” - David Marion</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bee’s journey with photography started over 20 years and through time has evolved into being one of her primary mechanisms of action and contribution to diversifying visual representation in the media landscape. Her love for the craft has led her down various creative exploratory paths, but one primary focus has remained – producing work and pieces that represent and tell stories about people of color in all beauty and complexity. All too often and for so long, American mainstream media has controlled stories and images of communities of color in irresponsible, and at times damaging ways. Today’s technical capabilities have allowed the people to take back some power to create, produce, and present their own visuals and narratives to the world. In addition, Bee has furthered her work in the area of filmmaking, allowing her even more space for exploration and experimentation in the arts. Bee’s passion to create and promote works that show the depth, beauty, variety, genius, soul, and much more of the people is a driving force in her craft. She pulls inspiration from creative forces such as Ava Duvernay, Qasim Basir, Derek Blanks, Ramona Rosales, Blitz Bazawule, Spike Lee and more. She sets to continue contributing and collaborating in this space, pushing creative bounds.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Charles Berger is a husband, father, tattooer, painter, and sign writer in Richmond, Virginia, and the owner of Two Pillars Tattoo, located in the heart of downtown. He has been interested in and practicing visual art since childhood, his work spanning a variety of mediums, from watercolor to enamel. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University in 2001, and soon after began working in Richmond tattoo shops, where he was guided and influenced by a number of local artists, both tattoo and otherwise. Charles and his family, at home and the shop, work closely with local charities in RVA as well as the children and classrooms of Barack Obama Elementary School. Our schools should be properly funded and our teachers adequately paid, because the future of our world is dependent on the children of the present.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ed Trask, after growing up in Loudoun County VA, left his rural existence, moved to Richmond VA and enrolled into the Virginia Commonwealth University’s painting program. While in school he spent every waking hour playing music in the mid 80’s Richmond punk scene and painting. By his third year in school, after many attempts to get gallery attention, he decided to make the many dilapidated buildings surrounding his school his gallery. Paintings were painted directly on buildings, or done on boards and screwed onto the buildings illegally until the city was covered. In 1992 Ed graduated with a painting degree and moved to Washington D.C. where he started touring with Dischord records band the Holy Rollers, and continued to paint illegal murals all over the world. Three years later he moved back to Richmond to join the band Kepone . While the demand for his paintings started to grow, he figured he should start a gallery and make a go at mural and sign work. Since then the work has never stopped flowing in, and Ed’s paintings and murals have been collected into many permanent collections including Gap, Capitol One, Dominion Energy, Fortune Magazine, N.B.C. Altria, Media General , Old Navy, .Ed is the cofounder of The RVA Street art Festival and has worked on community mural projects throughout the world . His studio is in Richmond where he lives with his beautiful wife and two children.</image:caption>

Soon after he co-founded Endeavor Studios, an artist-run studio space in the heart of the arts district in Jackson Ward that held monthly First Friday exhibitions and music performances to the public. Being involved in a grassroots project like Endeavor has taught Eli the power of collaboration and cooperation as well as connected him to an inclusive community of local creators. Eli’s own artistic influences stem from the landscapes and architecture that surround him. He aims to convey the emotion of an experienced moment or environment by fusing realistic scenery with abstract shapes, colors and structures in his paintings. The spaces are absent of human figures, but build a narrative that shows evidence of life forms through the presence of their surreal structures and unnatural light qualities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hamilton Glass is a painter and public artist living in Richmond, Virginia. His work focuses around using public art to build up communities, and create spaces in which the community members feel they have a stake in their surroundings. To him, it is vital that he uses his work in ways that serve the public and engage people through art. He believes in the power of art, which can hold communities together, and increase equity around access to the arts. Hamilton started his art career as an architect, and after working in the field for 7 years discovered his true passion lied with painting. His paintings, however, are reminiscent of his past as an architect through technique and style. He often utilizes geometric shapes, line, and color to create bold, graphic murals that work with the existing architecture or landscape to create site-specific works of art. One of the most important themes Glass likes to work with in his designs is movement–his work carries energy and momentum, either within the piece itself by moving the viewers eyes through layers of color and line, or more physically, in large scale murals. He uses rhythmic lines to connect vibrant colors, often adding in imagery/objects that more directly represent the concepts in his work. Glass is honored to be a frequent collaborator with organizations who are focused on community growth and outreach. This part of his practice offers him the opportunity to give back to the community through his art and is a huge inspiration in itself.</image:caption>

He attended Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA. There he was given the freedom and support to develop his distinct style. Hasson has amassed several large artists’ journals filled with sketches, notes, thoughts, ideas for his artwork. His life and his art have both become bound up within these journals, and he has developed a deeply personal artistic style that is filled with highly charged personal imagery, organic designs and iconography. Hasson works spontaneously, with each creative session evolving almost as if it is being grown. One overriding theme which weaves its way through Hasson’s work is a pure raw emotion caused by a hauntingly beautiful blend of form, color, design and elements of nature. resulting in an the almost organic flow of his works. The resulting works along with the artist himself is something truly unique.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This new work relies on the symbolism of materiality and on the intentions set during the creation of the painting. The act of mixing materials that would be considered non-traditional in the manner of alchemist places significance in the act of concoction. The “concoction’s” symbolism lays in the preparation, distribution and ritual of the creation of the painting. The material is the meaning and is predicated on its symbolism in both its relation to other materials, and in its singular symbolism within western culture. Many times these materials are culturally relevant and range in issues. I consider these paintings to be less in the tradition of painting, and more in the tradition of spells. The end result of the work is a residue of an activity and a process that has an aspiration other than representative form. This work asks for trust and belief in a process that allows me to address some of the darkest parts of our human condition in the present. Utilizing the only tools and processes I currently have access to, it is my way of holding light in times of darkness. While I hold no beliefs in its effectiveness, I believe the desire to relieve the suffering of others is common in the artistic spirit, and those desires are genuine, powerful and meaningful.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ian C. Hess - Ian C. Hess</image:title>
<image:caption>Ian C. Hess explores the beauty of brokenness expressed through the shattered, graceful, and failed myths of yesterday. While coinciding with the Japanese Philosophies of Wabi Sabi (acceptance of transience and imperfection) and Kintsugi (treats breakage as beauty to be emphasized), he aims to reinvent aspects of these categories into present tense embodied forms, adorned in the textures and idioms of our time. The central theme of portraiture expressed through the means of broken Grecko-Roman busts serve as the foundational constant amongst the myriad of techniques, and varied perspectives of the human ideal. The many pieces of his work synthesize a plurality of elements comprised of the past and present with universally recognized imagery within each painting as a specific locality that brings with it a generative power. All myth was once personal experience. While personal work is an ambition, Ian seeks to unite a broader community within Richmond as the Creative Director of Endeavor Studios. Endeavor is a 5-year running Studio Art Gallery that’s run by artists for artists who aim to deepen their practice and involve themselves in a diverse, creative community in a real and permanent way. With dedication and discipline, Endeavor is currently developing a 4-story building that ensures the Richmond Arts District and the artists in it are here to stay.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As an arts innovator, Kevin Orlosky produces community-driven public art that can be a force for bringing humans together while creating opportunities for healing and growth through culture. Believing that artwork that occurs in public spaces is best when it engages the community not passively, but actively, Orlosky develops interactive public artwork so that the broader community gains an increased appreciation for the ways in which art can be an integral part of life. As an artist, Orlosky works strategically to bring people together- to amplify their voices, and create art that is an extension of the community it exists in. He engages audiences in profound ways throughout the process of creation, challenging participants, and intentionally curating experiences that bring together divergent groups to create moments of meaning and introspection through collaboration. By involving the public in the production and creation of public works of art, Orlosky’s projects redefine the way community art is conceptualized while transferring ownership of the artwork to the community.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One afternoon when MeMe was 17 at the Truckee California Skate Park where she skateboarded with mostly boys, Meme watched a freight train pass by that was transformed by vivid, spray-painted letters. Her sense of social justice already ran deep, and that graffiti was a beautiful act of defiance to her. Beautiful Act of Defiance MeMe quickly developed a signature graff style that wove in her sense of local culture, she also discovered another talent: Her work with plants grew into a profession where she could enhance weddings, photoshoots, and events. murals, skateboarding, and flowers are the trifecta of her creative life. She is the first woman graffiti artist to get sponsored by Monster energy. Surrounded by men in the skate and art culture, she gravitated toward other women artists of all kinds. Meme’s high energy style of magnetizing people together produced an all-female mural in industrial West Oakland. She noticed that all the ladies there supported each other rather than competing, and the success of that public art inspired her to form Few and Far. This all-women street art and skateboard crew is a 20-member, international organization that has completed over 100 art commissions and projects in the U.S and abroad.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nadd is a self-taught figure painter and mixed media/digital illustrator, and also art instructor that mostly works with youth from marginalized backgrounds and communities. As a young, black, gnc person, art has always been a tool to explore their creativity, perceptions of reality, and a way of expressing themself in a medium and manner that other people value and understand. In their work, whether it be through personal projects and creating space for themself, or tutorials, teaching, and creating space for others, they always try to emphasize the act of creating and the importance of the process. Nadd believes that centering these things in art can help us all to get closer to our reason for existing and make us more well rounded people. One of their main projects, Tomato Studios, is a collaborative idea inspired by an unfulfilled need and desire for a creative space while on their artistic journey. It’s sole purpose is to provide a safe and open environment for those wishing to explore themselves through art. “Often times marginalized groups, people who look and live like me, are not given the space, resources, or simply the encouragement to pursue creative endeavors or soul freeing projects. It is my firm belief that everyone must, for themselves, explore and cultivate there inner gifts and learn how to channel and express them.” This is the mode with which they explore their own life and subjects in paint and illustration; searching for the essential truths in all they see. It is also the mode with which they hope to provide space and encouragement to others, through instruction and other such activities.</image:caption>

Her artistic ambition, however , began long before college and is also her current livelihood; pulsating in the plethora of artwork on canvas. Formally taught by her Grandmother Grace, who was a professional portrait artist, Broughton went on to excel in the arts throughout grade school and beyond. A post-college career in Hospitality Design taught her business sense, enhanced her work ethic, and reiterated personal values which nudged her in another direction. In March 2014, Broughton began her career as a visual artist. Her work is abstract and emotionally driven though heavily inspired by repeating patterns in nature. Through Abstract expression, she works to connect with the flow of life; delving deep into black bottom oceans; ascending curiously towards infinite stars, and ultimately discovering the divinity within ourselves. Her art is simply the all-encompassing Mother Nature, emerging through her fingertips. Broughton has exhibited in group and solo shows in the US, as well as in the UK and Australia. Her work is included in private collections all over the world including Germany, Australia, Spain, London, Canada, and Mexico. In addition, Shaylen works with several nonprofits in Richmond VA, leading community art projects such as large-scale interior and exterior murals and after-school art programs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ron Stokes is a Native of Washington DC. He grew up largely in the Bay Area of California, but has lived in Richmond, VA for the past 10 years. He is a self-taught street artist that merged his talents with abstract art and developed a unique style of storytelling through color and pattern. The beauty of abstract work is about finding what speaks to you in the painting. He creates each piece based on emotion, thought, and what inspires him in the moment. He speaks through color and imagery rather than words bringing to life stories of culture, history and the world around him . He has worked on both large scale and small scale projects in many cities while giving back to charities and foundations. He sees his artistry as the bridge that connects art to the city.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sarah Apple - Sarah Apple</image:title>
<image:caption>Hi there! I’m Sarah Apple, the lady behind the brush, and I create bold, bright, badass signs for business and customers alike. My passion for letters began in 2014 while working in a restaurant. I took it upon myself to maintain the restaurant’s daily chalkboard and soon became obsessed with this ubiquitous communication form: signs. I particularly loved the challenge of creating sidewalk signs quickly and efficiently, intending to compel an audience that is supposed to be merely passing by. It was there I became hooked on the power of everyday signage, and I began deeply exploring lettering as a craft, as well as an art-form. After honing my craft for 3 years, I leapt into full-time sign painting in February of 2017. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with all kinds of businesses and people, including branding agencies, co-working spaces like Gather, popular restaurants and cafes like Richmond’s Sugar & Twine, galleries, and many more! Today I still offer chalkboard services. However, my interests have evolved. Now I mainly focus on creating custom hand-painted signage for people’s businesses and homes. As I consider myself a life-long student of the lettering and sign painting trade, my toolbox of tricks continues to expand, which means that Lucky Signs is always offering a better service today than yesterday.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hello! My name is Courtney Lebow, I earned my Bachelor's in Cultural Anthropology as well as my Bachelor's of Fine Arts from SUNY Plattsburgh in upstate NY, graduated in 2014. I relocated to Richmond, VA in July of 2014, and have been working over the years with vibrant organizations such as The Visual Arts Center and ART 180. I'm quite the chameleon artist and love creating projects in many mediums! Teaching and utilizing my love for the visual arts as a vehicle for community connection is my ultimate professional goal, and absolute passion. I finished my Masters in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in December 2018 and since graduating, I have been teaching art full time at Hanover High School and continuing my personal art practice.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Barry O'Keefe - Barry O’Keefe</image:title>
<image:caption>Barry O’Keefe is an artist from Richmond, Virginia working in printmaking, painting, and public art. Thematically, his work engages with cultural amnesia, neglected public spaces, and the design of the contemporary landscape. In 2016 he transformed a derelict boxcar into a mobile mural and performance stage for a national music festival. In 2017, Open Inbox, his series of functional public sculptures was installed in Richmond’s parks in partnership with Richmond’s Public Arts Commission. In 2019 he created a giant, rolling shadow puppet theater for a collaborative project that won the InLight festival People’s Choice Award. His work has been exhibited in five countries and seven states and can be found in many private and public collections, including the Valentine Museum, the Black History Museum of Virginia, and the Library of Virginia.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I'm Mahari, an artist, curator and writer born in 1995 in Washington DC. After graduating with a painting degree from VCU in 2017, I started cultivating communion rooted in radical Black well-being and self-determination. I'm committed to creating self-soothing salves, spiritual maturation, and liberatory magic medicine making. I was the 2019 - 2020 recipient of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Fellowship, and the 2020 recipient of the Visual Arts Center Emerging Artist Award. I live and work between Newport News and Richmond, Virginia where I am one of five 2020 - 2021 First Patron Artists in Residence with the Contemporary Arts Network. I've led shared projects like In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens, We Made Armor, 2019 and Primordial Emanations, that which is brought forth follows the womb: a surrender to her luminous blackness, 2020, as embodiments of Black space for Black people to share and receive recognition for our cultural, intellectual contributions while we’re still here. I read writers like Tananarive Due, Alice Walker, Toni Cade Bambara, Octavia Butler & Ntozake Shange for sustenance and direction. I think about my work as ancestor reverence.</image:caption>
